The Rivers State Government has assured Miss Amos Joy, a fire-burn victim from Bille Community, that it will bear the full cost of her treatment at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH), Port Harcourt.
The Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, gave the assurance during a visit to the victim at the hospital.
Prof. Odu said she became aware of Joy’s condition shortly before the visit and commended the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr Vincent Nwachukwu; the Chief Medical Director of RSUTH, Prof. Chizindu Alikor; and the medical team for their swift response in transferring the victim to the hospital for specialised treatment.
She disclosed that the state government would settle all medical expenses incurred throughout Joy’s stay at the hospital.
The Deputy Governor also revealed that she had provided financial assistance to support the victim and her family during the recovery period.
Speaking on the intervention, Dr Nwachukwu said the Ministry of Health acted immediately after learning of the incident through online reports.
He explained that Joy was promptly evacuated from the facility where she was initially receiving treatment and transferred to RSUTH for specialised medical care.
Also speaking, Prof. Alikor assured that Joy was receiving comprehensive medical attention at no cost to her.
He said the victim was responding positively to treatment and making steady progress towards recovery.
The government’s intervention followed reports of the fire incident involving the Bille Community resident, who sustained burn injuries and was subsequently transferred to RSUTH for further treatment.
